Cel Animation
Cel animation is the oldest and historically the most popular form of animation that is also known as traditional or hand-drawn animation. In this type animation is beautifully created by drawing images or frames for a flipbook that are further inked or painted on cels after approval. The cels are celluloid plastic sheets that are transparent and clear on which variety of backgrounds or other cels can be easily laid. The frames etched on the cels are then played back rapidly so as to give the illusion of movement. The first real time example of cel animation was Jet Set Radio for the Sega Dreamcast. After that many other examples were set out of which some of the television shows like Family Guy, Futurama, Spider-Man, and The Simpsons are most popular.
Clay Animation
Clay animation was introduced with the introduction of clay like substance called plasticine in the year 1897. The first film produced using this type was released in 1902 and later on, the type became more popular and widespread in the industry. The introduction of Gumby, a green clay humanoid figure, gave a big boost to the popularity of clay animation. The most significant examples of this kind are witnessed in Wallace and Gromit series of movies and the Celebrity Deathmatch series.
Stop Animation
Stop-motion animation also known as performance animation is a type where a physically manipulated object is used to deliver an illusion of movement. This type gives a feel of a magic taking place when the images are viewed in a continuous sequence. In the method puppets are used for animation purposes to give the look and feel of a real life. Every time when puppets change movement photographs are taken to create an optical vision of a fluid like movement. The first instance of stop animation is credited to Albert E. Smith and J. Stuart Blackton for The Humpty Dumpty Circus in the year 1898.
Computer Animation
Computer animation is the latest technique used in the animation industry. In this method computer technology is used to make hand drawn characters and still images appear real. A still or non-moving image is taken and then a collection of similar images is displayed with slight changes in every subsequent image. This collection of images is then displayed rapidly with slight alteration in images to give an illusion of movement. Computer animation is mainly of two types, the 2D and the 3D animation that are presently creating a rage in the industry. In 2D method scanned drawings are made look real using computer technology whereas in 3D unusual objects or characters are used to create animation that appear in a three dimensional space.
